18 WHEELER CRASH CLOSES I-45

Just before 4:30 a.m. this morning an 18-wheeler carrying a UPS contract load flipped and burned. The driver who had no injuries said he was southbound between FM 1097 and FM 830 when 2 deer appeared in the roadway in front of him. He said he grabbed the wheel with both hands and swerved a bit. That maneuver caused his truck to drop into the ditch between the freeway and feeder. Afraid he would roll it he kept it there before easing back onto the roadway. That is when the truck crossed both lanes, struck the concrete barrier, flipped and caught fire. The driver was able to crawl through a small opening in the passenger door and ran from the truck. He said he heard several explosions before flames reached 100 feet in the air.
The load in the first trailer which was mostly clay was destroyed. The second trailers cargo remained intact.
Milstead Heavy Duty is on the scene and having to load the truck and trailer on a trailer. The concrete barriers need to be replaced and a hazmat team is cleaning up the spilled diesel fuel.
The road is expected to be closed until at least noon.
Highway 75 is also very heavy..
All traffic is being forced to exit FM 830 southbound. Northbound traffic is flowing at highway speeds.

In addition, I45 at FM 1960 is closed with a fatal accident.
