Just before 11 a.m. this morning two 18-wheelers were involved in a crash on SH 242 at Hickory. According to witnesses the Swift Transport 18-wheeler box truck driven by Manuel Jiimenez, 55 of El Paso was eastbound and made a u-turn at Hickory Road. As he did this an eastbound truck hauling logs owned by Courtney LaBuff of Cleveland and driven by Carl Johnson, 59 also of Cleveland was unable to stop. The log truck slammed into the trailer of the box truck with such force that it split the trailer in two. According to DPS Trooper Lopez on the scene, Jimenez stated he missed his turn.
Johnson who was still in the truck when witnesses arrived. A small fire had started in the engine compartment. As witnesses worked to get the driver out a wrecker from Livingston who came up on the scene extinguished the fire and cut the battery cables.
Johnson was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
Milstead Environmental responded to the scene to assist in cleaning up fluids spilled from the log truck.
Smith Towing of Cleveland was able to load Johnsons truck and return it to Cleveland.
The Swift Transport tractor was undamaged and was driven from the scene.
Milstead sent two heavy duty wreckers, along with crews to off load some of the cargo of McDonalds 32 ounce cups and additional equipment to load the damaged trailer
.SH 242 reopened by 1:30 p.m.
