Just after 7am Tarkington Fire Department responded to a major accident near the intersection of SH105 at SH321. They were assisted by Cleveland Fire Department.
DPS say a Dodge Stratus was traveling east on CR2242 and failed to stop for the stop sign at SH105. The Stratus was struck in the drivers side by a westbound 18 wheeler which jack-knifed and pushed the Stratus into the path of an east-bound Impala and struck in the passenger side.
The passenger of the Stratus, Kristopher Ray Simmons, age 25 of Cleveland and Evelyn Melinder, age 68, the driver of the Impala were transported by PHI to Hermann Hospital in Houston. Caitlynne Fontenot age 5, also in the Stratus was taken to Cleveland Hospital with minor back pain.
Martie Elizabeth Hodges age 27, the driver of the Stratus was about to be loaded on the helicopter when she went into traumatic arrest. She was transported to Cleveland Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Even though the child was in a safety seat neither front seat occupant wore seatbelts.
