Shortly before 6:00AM, Tarkington firefighters were dispatched to Cannon’s Grocery for a report that a vehicle had ran into a building. Firefighters arrived at the scene to find a car had ran through a storage garage next to the store, going through the front and coming out the side. The driver was transported to Cleveland Regional Medical Center by City of Cleveland EMS with unknown injuries. Texas DPS troopers and Liberty County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the accident.
Then shortly before 8:00AM, Tarkington firefighters were again dispatched for a motor vehicle accident just past Cannon’s Grocery on SH321. Firefighters arrived on location to find a SUV had struck a dump truck in the side, pinning the driver of the SUV in her vehicle. Firefighters had to use the vehicle extrication tools, commonly referred to as the “Jaws of Life”, to cut the driver out of the car. A landing zone for LifeFlight was set up on SH321 just south of the accident scene and the driver was flown to a Houston-area trauma center.
Complicating firefighters’ efforts was a large amount of diesel fuel that had spilled into the roadway when one of the dump truck’s fuel tanks ruptured. Approximately 100 gallons of diesel was spilled across the road’s surface, making it very slippery and posing a fire hazard. The Liberty County HazMat team was called to contain the leak. In addition, personnel from Miltsead Environmental were also on the scene to assist with the cleanup.
