Just after midnight on Wednesday morning Montgomery County Precinct 4 Deputy Juan Chapa. As Chapa was working traffic on US 59 he observed a Toyota FouriRunner traveling north on US 59 speeding in a construction zone. AS he approached the vehicle driven by Benjamin Stephanon, 33 of 1861 Chanterelle Drive in McKinnleyville, California.
After smelling what Chapa thought was marijuana he asked permission to search the vehicle. Stephanon refused consent so Chapa’s K-9 partner Porter went to work. Within minutes the dog had the scent,
Chapa then discovered a box in the vehicle with marijuana and a cigar on the driver floorboard with marijuana.
In the glove box was $16,000 which Stephanon claims to have come from BBQ stand in Califofnia and from winning BBQ Cook-off contests.
He was charged with possession of marijuana and money laundering.
