Around 6:20 a.m. Wednesday morning, Cleveland ISD Police Chief Rex Evans was checking the areas around CISD school campuses for any suspicious or criminal activity, when he discovered what every parent fears.

Chief Evans saw a small white car with a man inside, parked near the Middle School Campus. The man was slumped down in the front driver’s seat, which looked very out of place, especially being so close to a school campus, particularly in time frame when so many children were arriving for classes.

He made contact with the driver, Eddie Chatman, from Polk County. A check of Chatman’s ID through dispatch revealed he is a Registered Sex Offender (Online Solicitation of a Minor-P.C. 33.021(B) ). Chief Evans also found Chatman was in possession of several types of a controlled substance.

Chatman was subsequently arrested and transported to the Liberty County Jail for Drug Possession in a School Zone, which is a Felony Offense.  His criminal history already involved charges connected to narcotics and juveniles.

Chief Evans is asking the Cleveland community to talk with their children and grandchildren regarding Chatman, to determine whether more laws have been broken. Should anyone have any information about Chatman related to any CISD students, they should contact Chief Evans at CISD Police Department.
