On Wednesday, January 5, 2022, the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to 125 CR-117, Raywood, Liberty County, Texas in reference to a theft of copper in progress. The location was a fuel pump station. When the LCSO deputies arrived, they were assisted by Liberty County Precinct 2 deputies, Liberty Police Department, and the local Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Warden. When the location was checked the Game Warden observed a male subject running towards an area of the property where a hole had been cut in the fencing. The Warden and Deputies told the suspect multiple times to stop running but he continued to run towards a wooded area.
A LCSO Interdiction Unit arrived with his K9, and other deputies showed up and set up a perimeter so that a search for the subject could be made. Approximately 300 yards away the K9 located and apprehended the suspect. The suspect was identified as Billy John Hampton, W/M, DOB: 09/12/1973 who resides in Chambers County. Hampton was arrested and transported to the hospital where he was treated and received several stitches in his forearm. The deputies were able to locate a backpack that contained multiple tools used for the theft of copper along with Hampton’s personalized gloves. Also, the deputies located approximately 1.69 grams of suspected crystal meth and other drug paraphernalia inside the backpack.
When Hampton was released from the hospital, he was transported to the Liberty County Jail. He was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance – a Third Degree Felony, Evading Arrest with a prior conviction – A State Jail Felony, and Theft of Materials – a Third Degree Felony.
