Cowboy Hat Goes to Canada

Roman Forest Police Officer Carmen Smith traded uniform hats with Royal Canadian Mounted Police Officer Sarah Wilkin.

Officer Smith attended slain Baton Rouge Police Corporal Montrell Jackson’s funeral on Monday July 25th. There were officers from all over; each state was represented. Even officers from out of the country. Smith took a picture with Royal Canadian Mounted Police Officer Wilkin. While other officers were trading patches, Officer Smith said she didn’t have any to trade. Someone jokingly suggested that they trade hats. The officers looked at each other and said, “why not.” They then traded uniform hats.

“OMG, this just happened! I didn’t have a patch to trade so we traded hats,” said Officer Smith. “I now have a Royal Canadian Mounted Police hat!” Another amazing experience.”

The Canadian officer said that she has had the Mounted Police hat for over 14 years but has always wanted a cowboy hat which is hard to come by in some parts of the world.

The Roman Forest Police uniform policy allows for officers the option of wearing a black cowboy hat for formal events, at the officer’s own expense.

“I am proud of our officers for representing RFPD so well,” said Roman Forest Police Chief Stephen Carlisle. “To have a network across the continent is priceless.”

Rest in peace Corporal Montrell Jackson. We got it from here. End of Watch July 17, 2016.
