The Conroe Police Department cordially invites the public to attend the 2013 Police Officers Memorial Ceremony on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, 11:30 am at Heritage Place Park, 500 Collins St., Conroe, TX. The ceremony honors Our Nation’s fallen officers who have lost their lives during their service to the public. Conroe Police Department’s only officer to die from injuries sustained in the line of duty occurred in 1982 when Sgt. Ed Holcomb responded to a domestic disturbance. The ceremony coincides with National Police Week, May 12-18th, where communities across the country come together to honor and remember those officers who have lost their lives in service to their communities. This year the names of 320 fallen officers will be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC. The names include officers killed in 2012 and officers who died in previous years but had not been added to the memorial.
The National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund website, nleomf.org, gives sobering statistics of the number of line of duty deaths for law enforcement officers. Of the over 19,000 law enforcement officers to make the ultimate sacrifice in our nation, 1653 of the deaths were Texas law enforcement officers. In 2012, approximately 127 law enforcement officers were killed nationwide, a decline of 23% compared to 2011. However, more officers were killed in Texas than any other state.
The Conroe Police Department recognizes and appreciates the support of our community and would consider community presence at the 2013 Police Officers Memorial Ceremony an honor.
