Tuesday morning, MCHD was dispatched with Montgomery Fire Department to a motorcycle crash on FM 149, between Sharp Road and Bailey Grove. When they arrived they found a motorcycle rider behind the guardrail deceased.

According to DPS, 53-year-old Earle Smith Jr. of Montgomery was southbound on his 2012 Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle when his rear-view mirror clipped the side of Houston Hutto’s northbound pickup truck. The jolt caused Smith to lose control of his motorcycle, crashing into the guardrail and ejecting him from the vehicle. Despite his helmet, Smith was killed by the impact.

Montgomery County Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace Matt Masden pronounced Smith dead on the scene and ordered Eickenhorst Funeral Directors to transport Smith to the Montgomery County Forensic Center for autopsy. In the hours after the crash, DPS reque  requested the assistance of TXDOT to detour traffic around the scene.

It was later determined both were driving close to the center line at the time of the crash. The investigation is continuing.
