Decaying Body Found in Barn

BAAACUTLPolice found the decaying body of an unidentified person inside a barn on Monday.

Around noon, acting on information received from Liberty County Pct. 3 Constable Mark Davidson, Sgt. Investigator Brian Bortz of the Sheriff’s Department went to the home of Billy Bennett in North Liberty County to check on a reported body in a barn behind the residence.

After Bennett consented to a search, Sgt. Bortz went inside the barn and found the human remains of an unknown person wrapped in a tarp. Sgt. Bortz reported the remains appeared to have been there for six or seven months. Because of the conditions of the remains, it was not possible to determine the age, sex or race of the person.

The scene was secured while Sgt. Investigator Chris Ungles waited on a search warrant from Judge Chap Cain’s 253rd District Court. Justice of the Peace Ralph Fuller responded to the scene and ordered an autopsy to determine a possible cause of death and other vital information.

Although this case is still in the early stage of investigation by Sgt. Bortz with other possible charges pending, Capt. Mark Ellington stated that Billy Ray Bennett, 44, was arrested and charged with Tampering with Evidence and Abuse of a Corpse. Bennett was placed in the Liberty County jail and will go before a Judge in the morning.
