DEPUTY ALMOST HIT BY WRONG WAY DRIVER

Montgomery County Precinct 1 Deputy Constable Joey Ashton worked New Year’s Eve with the DWI Task Force. At 3 am he went home, loaded up his dog and headed for the coast for his ritual of watching the sunrise on the New Year. Driving south on I-45 with several other vehicles around with heavy fog he was only able to do close to 50mph. As Ashton came under the Hardy Toll Road, he was met by what he described as two massive headlights coming right at him. He said he has no idea how the wrong way driver missed him and others. Ashton immediately called 911 and reported it. An attempt to locate went out and the driver was located on I-45 near Twin Peaks by Shenandoah Police, he had run out of gas. The driver, identified as Devon Ray Bennett, 33, of 9022 Heather Springs in Spring was arrested for DWI and possession of cocaine. The situation hit Ashton hard. In August 2007 his brother Donald Ashton and sister in law Kelly Lynn Ashton and a friend William Helton were on their way back from Sturgis. Helton was driving Ashton’s Hummer H3 when a 15-year-old, coming from a barn party and intoxicated, ran a stop sign and entered Interstate 81 in Kansas striking the Hummer. Donald Ashton was killed, Kelly is now a quadriplegic and been in a wheelchair ever since. Helton was severely injured. The driver of the Camaro also died.
