Deputy Breeding’s “Special” Investigation

During her short life of 21 years, Montgomery County Deputy Sheriff Catherine Breeding touched many lives, and left many with stories that will bring smiles for years to come. One of those stories involved a local business and took place on her twenty-first birthday, August 12, 2014.

Deputy Breeding, who died in an off-duty accident Thursday, was still in training at the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Police Academy last August. Her instructor, Sgt. Sanchez, left a birthday surprise on her desk – a container of cake balls, which have become popular in bakeries throughout the country. Sgt. Sanchez removed the bakery’s name and other information from the container, and the class assignment for that day was to investigate and find the source of the cake balls.

Kathy Owens, owner of Bawmaw’s Cake Shop and Flowers of Conroe, says her shop received several calls about their cake balls that day. Later in the day, Deputy Breeding and three Training Academy classmates arrived at Bawmaw’s and explained their investigation. Deputy Breeding showed Shannon Davis, who makes the cake balls, a photo lineup and asked her to identify the suspect (cake ball purchaser). Davis positively identified their instructor and the case was closed! The group then posed for a photo with Davis.

Owens and Davis say they were saddened to learn of Breeding’s death and will never forget their unusual encounter.
