deputy shoots at credit card theft suspect at woodlands mall

A little before noon on Wednesday Taud Damonn Washington , 41, broke into a vehicle parked at 24-Hour Fitness, stole several items including a credit card, and went on a shopping spree in the Woodlands Mall. The owner of the vehicle was inside the gym working out. Washington is a registered sex offender and a habitual criminal who was released from TDCJ on September 29, 2012 to a halfway house on Old Beaumont Road in Houston. This is his second arrest since.

Washington’s first stop was the Microsoft Store where he attempted to make a purchase. He moved on to Helzberg Jewelers and attempted to use the stolen credit card to make another purchase, which was denied. Next, he entered Zales Jewelers where he once again attempted to make a purchase with the stolen card.

By this time, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office had been alerted to the attempted transactions and units were quickly closing in on the mall. Mall security had moved to the entrance of Zales, and began delivering a play by play account of Washington’s actions to the Sheriff’s Office.

Washington exited Zales, walking through Sears lower level on his way to the parking lot. Deputies were arriving on the scene as the suspect opened the door got of his 1997 XJ6 Jaguar and got inside. Woodlands Mall Security attempted to block him in with an SUV but Washington continued moving backwards and plowed into the SUV.

Washington defied orders issued by a Montgomery County Deputy Sheriff to exit the vehicle. He chose to accelerate instead, driving towards the deputy. In fear of his life, the deputy drew his service revolver and shot once through the windshield on the driver’s side of the suspect’s vehicle. Fortunately the shot missed Washington, but persuaded him to surrender as he realized Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputies meant business.

The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office and detectives from the sheriff’s office responded to the incident. Sheriff Gage was also present at the crime scene, overseeing the investigation and ensuring the deputy was unharmed.

No one was injured in the incident. The Woodlands Mall security SUV received minor damage to the left rear and the Jaguar sustained damage to the right rear. Washington was charged with aggravated assault on a public servant and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (the car). He was booked into the Montgomery County Jail.

Washington, who also goes by the name Xavier Richards, is no stranger to a jail cell. He is a well known repeat offender to law enforcement agencies from the coast to Conroe with a long criminal record.

· November 25, 2006– Police once again arrested Washington for indecent exposure. This charge brought him 150 days in the Harris County Jail when he was sentenced on June 26, 2007 with time served.

· July 24, 2007– Houston Police arrested Washington for possession of a firearm by a felon. Two days later he was sentenced to TDCJ for 2-years. He was released from TDCJ after serving his sentence but still hadn’t learned his lesson.

· September 5, 2009– he was arrested in Houston again for indecent exposure and sentenced in April 2010 to 180-days in the Harris County Jail.

· 2011– He was sent to TDCJ again and released on September 29, 2012 to a halfway house on Old Beaumont Road in Houston.

· November 5, 2012– Washington was arrested for theft of property and sentenced a few days later to 20-days in jail by a Harris County judge.
