Just after 8pm Friday night the driver of a utility truck was witnessed by any as he drove at a high rate of speed on the shoulder on I-45 just north of North Loop 610. A short time before the driver of an 18-wheeler auto transport broke down and was parked on the shoulder with flashers and safety triangles set up. The utility truck slammed into the rear of the 18-wheeler killing the driver of the utility truck instantly. A small fire broke out under the hood which was quickly extinguished by the 18-wheeler driver. The two passengers of the utility truck were transported to Ben Taub Hospital in critical condition. One died on arrival at the hospital. According to HPD Investigators, the impact pushed the parked 18-wheeler 15 feet forward.
The freeway remained closed until just before midnight.
