Just after 9 pm Monday Magnolia Fire Department was dispatched to a reported crash with victims trapped. The location given was SH 249 northbound just beyond Wood Trace. As units arrived on the scene they found a Chevrolet Tahoe with severe damage on its side. A trauma nurse who was coming home from work witnessed the crash and stopped to assist. She was able to remove 18-year-old Erick Samueal Venegas, a Magnolia teen from the vehicle, but he was already deceased. DPS arrived on the scene to start the investigation. Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Precinct 5 and Magnolia Police assisted in traffic control as the northbound lanes were closed until just after 2am. According to a witness the Tahoe was traveling at an extremely high rate of speed in the left lane of SH 249. A pickup with several friends was traveling next to it. Just north of Wood Trace a sign is posted along with lanes painted that the lane merges. The driver ran off the end of the left lane, crossed the right two lanes and struck the curb. There as his vehicle rode the curb, the aluminum wheel denigrated. The Tahoe then flipped over. The vehicle that had been next to the Tahoe also stopped and was later interviewed by Troopers. The location is the same location of several other fatal crashes over the years. As troopers worked the crash, another crash occurred on the southbound lanes closing it also. That crash was quickly cleared and only one person was transported to the hospital in stable condition. DPS is continuing the investigation to determine if any charges will be filed on the other driver. Montgomery County Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace Masden responded to the scene and ordered Eickenhorst Funeral Directors to transport the Venegas to the Montgomery County Forensic Center for autopsy. There were no other injuries.
