Sunday, at approximately 3:45 PM, a DPS Trooper detained the driver of a Chrysler 300 for a traffic violation on IH-10 in Guadalupe County. The vehicle was occupied by a male driver and female passenger. The driver provided false identifying information and a brief struggle ensued. The Trooper deployed his taser but the suspect was able to regain entry into the vehicle and flee at a high rate of speed. Pursuing troopers lost sight of the suspect vehicle. A short time later, DPS Aircraft located the vehicle traveling westbound on the IH-10 access road. DPS Aircrew guided troopers to the suspect location. Troopers located the vehicle in Bexar County as it entered IH-10 traveling westbound in the eastbound traffic lanes. The vehicle came to a stop just before Loop 1604 as a Trooper used his patrol car as a barrier the driver exited the vehicle and crouched behind the driver’s door. Troopers approached and with weapons drawn while yelling commands. The suspect fired a handgun striking a
Trooper in the upper right arm. The Trooper returned fire with his DPS issued rifle neutralizing the suspect. The DPS Aircrew landed on IH10 and airlifted the Trooper to University Hospital in San Antonio. The Trooper has undergone surgery and is recovering. The suspect was transported to SAAMC in San Antonio where he remains in critical condition.
The 33 year old suspect was wanted on multiple felony warrants out of Bexar County. The handgun used by the suspect was reported stolen in 2016.
