According to Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies, a man was killed after being shot by an off-duty, Prairie View A&M officer in a northwest Harris County parking lot. Investigators said the officer was working an extra job as security for Walgreens on Veterans Memorial and Antoine Drive.
Just before 9 p.m., a man known to write bad checks entered the store. According to deputies, the man fled to the parking lot when the officer tried to detain him.
A struggle ensued outside, and the officer allegedly tried to stop the man with a taser, but it didn’t work. Instead, the man got into a car and almost ran over the officer.
“The suspect then began to drive off in his vehicle, at that point nearly hitting the officer,” HCSO Dep. Thomas Gilliland said. “The officer discharged his weapon, striking the vehicle multiple times.”
Deputies said the suspect was shot at least once then lost control of the car and crashed into a flower bed on the other side of the parking lot. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
No names have been released. Officials said the officer was not injured.
This case remains under investigation.
