CLEVELAND- The Splendora Volunteer Fire Department assisted the Cleveland and Tarkington Fire Departments early Friday in battling a two-alarm blaze that gutted Pace-Stancil Funeral Home on E. Crockett St. in Cleveland.
The fire, which was reported around 2:15 a.m., flared and began spreading shortly after firefighters arrived.
There was extensive damage to the main area of the structure, and heavy smoke damage throughout. Damage was also caused by heat so intense it melted light fixtures on the outside of the building.
The facility’s caretaker was not on the premises at the time of the fire.
Two bodies inside the building in preparation for upcoming funerals were not believed to be affected.
The City of Cleveland Fire Marshal’s Office and the Cleveland Police Department are investigating. CPD officials confirmed on Friday that the fire is suspected to be an arson
