EVER WONDER WHY FIRE TRUCKS ARE USED ON ACCIDENT SCENES TO BLOCK THE ROAD

Early Sunday morning Houston Police and Fire were dispatched to a major accident on Interstate 45 near Tidwell. They arrived on the scene to find a vehicle had struck the center concrete wall. Traffic was still moderate at 3am. Houston Fire Department Engine 31 parked across two lanes of traffic blocking it as crews worked the crash. Moments later an intoxicated driver driving a black vehicle slammed into the rear of the fire truck at a high rate of speed, ripping the tailboard off the truck and damaging the rear. This crash forced a total closure of the freeway. The driver was arrested driving while intoxicated. No fire firefighters were injured. In fact, if it had been for the fire truck the injuries could have included many first responders. Emergency workers are constantly plagued with drivers who ignore scenes, speed past fire trucks and police working accident scenes. It is an experience to work a crash on a highway with vehicles speeding past at highway speeds plus. You cannot count the scenes where a fire trick or police vehicles are parked completely across the road and a motorist tries to take a shoulder or even go around through the ditch. When confronted the normal response is, “oh is it closed.”  So many crashes take so many officers off the streets to make calls just to sit on the freeway to block every possible opening that a motorist can squeeze through and drive right into a scene.
