At approximately 10:45pm Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a man riding a bicycle northbound on FM 1774 at Lost Creek. The deputy made contact with the approximately 40-year-old adult male who was riding in the center turn lane of the unlit area of FM 1774. He was then told to stay off the roadway. Within minutes of that another call came in just north of that intersection at Tudor Way. The caller said a man on a bicycle had been struck. MCHD responded to the scene along with Magnolia Fire Department. CPR was started on the male but he passed away within minutes.
According to DPS who worked the crash, the rider had been northbound in the southbound lane and appeared he had tried to cross the road. They say the male was already on the ground when he was struck and then the bicycle. The bicycle was wedged under the vehicle damaging the under-carriage and exhaust system. The bicycle had no lighting or reflectors which would enable it to be seen.
Montgomery County Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace Matt Masden responded to the scene and ordered Eickenhorst Funeral Directors to transport the victim to the Montgomery County Forensic Center for autopsy. No charges are anticipated in the crash. With one lane southbound closed as Troopers worked the crash several vehicles came through the scene at highway speed instead of slowing as prescribed by law. Another crash occurred when one driver stopped for a deputy who was directing traffic at the scene that vehicle was struck from behind. The driver who was hit was transported to the hospital where he was treated and released. Troopers found no identification on the male who was riding the bicycle.
