feds prosecute felon in possession of a firearm

United States Attorney John M. Bales announced today that an Upshur County woman has pleaded guilty to a firearms violation in the Eastern District of Texas.

ERICA NICOLE COOK, age 29, of Gilmer, Texas, admitted to being a felon in possession of a firearm today before United States Magistrate Judge Charles Everingham IV.

        According to information presented in court, on or about August 7, 2010, at a residence located in Upshur County, Texas, in the Eastern District of Texas, Cook possessed a shotgun.  Cook had previously been convicted of a felony offense, specifically, forgery. 

At sentencing, Cook faces a sentence of up to 10 years imprisonment and a fine up to $250,000.  A sentencing date has not been set at this time.

        This case is being investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives, and the Upshur County Sheriff’s Department.  This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mary Ann Cozby.
