FIRE ALARM CATCHES FIRE

Monday afternoon a large geyser erupted from the ground at the intersection of Atascocita Road and FM 1960 That geyser was due to a 20”  concrete/asbestos water line rupture.

According with Severn Trent Services workers the line which was close to 20 years old just finally gave out. Before repairs on the lines could be started a crew would need to shut down the main valves. This caused two issues. First the valves were also aged and would not completely close. Second, the low water pressure set off several alarms for commercial water sprinkler systems in the area.

The small pump the crews were using were not getting them ahead. A much larger pump was then brought in from La Porte to start the pump process which they say could take until after midnight Monday.

However during this time businesses along FM 1960 west of West Lake Houston Parkway do not have water and most likely won’t until at least noon on Tuesday.

At 9:40pm another fire alarm came in at the Wal-mart Store in the 6400 block of FM 1960 East. Atascocita Fire Department responded to the scene. As they  were enroute the asked for additional units , knowing the water pressure was low.

When the first units arrived they found a smoke haze in the building. The store was immediately evacuated and some of the power was cut.

In addition a call went out for additional tanker trucks and fire equipment from the area. New Caney dispatched their tanker to the scene, Porter Fire Department responded with a tanker and their hose trailer which carries 3000’ of 5-inch hose. An above the ground main water line as the Chief of the Atascocita Fire Department explained. He said if they needed water it would come from another Municipal Utility District and the distance was not close.

After close to an hour the source of the smoke was found. It was discovered the back up battery in the fire alarm control panel was smoldering.

The store was then turned back over to management.

Several businesses which normally stay open late were closed with no water.
