FIRE DESTROYS NEW CANEY MOBILE HOME

At 4:08 Sunday afternoon the New Caney Fire Department responded to a mobile home fire on Liberty Street just west of US 59. When they arrived they were met with heavy smoke conditions which were soon met by heavy fire conditions inside.

With a three minute response time the fire was able to be brought under control quickly but  with some stubborn area in the attic area they decided to request additional assistance from Porter, Splendora and Caney Creek Fire Departments.  River Plantation Fire Department provided coverage for the New Caney area by backing a pumper into New Caney’s Fire station.

Although there was smoke and water damage throughout the home, the main fire damage was confined to the kitchen and dining room areas.

As firefighters searched the home they found “Girl”, a pit bull and her six three week old puppies and were able to rescue them.

The Montgomery County Assistant Fire Marshal Darin Hess determined the fire was electrical in nature starting near a wall outlet.

A wrecker driver contacted Mike Cherry who is also a wrecker driver and advised him there was a fire on his street. When he arrived he realized it was his home.

His parents Bill and Jackie had left approximately 30 minutes earlier to see a movie, they were contacted and quickly returned.

Also living in the home with them was Mikes wife Toni and their soon to be 8-year-old son Michael Jr. All his Christmas gifts were lost in the fire Toni said but at least the home was insured.
