FIRE UNDER CONTROL BUT NOT OUT

A fire that burned out of control Saturday afternoon has been brought under control but is long from out. Crews from the New Caney Fire Department remained on the scene throughout Saturday night to monitor the situation.

The land which encompasses a sandpit had a lot of debris scattered across it including hundreds of tires that were going to be used for a go-cart track which never happened.

When firefighters arrived just after 3:30 pm Saturday heavy black smoke billowed from the fire. Smoke could be seen as far away as the Houston National Cemetery on Veterans Memorial and Beltway 8.

Crews from New Caney, Porter, Huffman, Caney Creek, Needham, Splendora, and River Plantation assisted in bringing this fire under control. The Texas Forest Service was also sent out with two dozers and a track on how to extinguish the fire.

According to the Texas Forest Service, after walking the burn area with a GPS it was determined only 6 acres of the 35-acre parcel had burned.

Please be safe driving through the area on FM 1485 near the County line as smoke continues to blow across the road,
