Just before 6 pm Monday evening a crash was reported on Loop 494, moments later another another on Old Sorters and FM 1314, then another crash reported. But at 6:20 the crash that got the attention of multiple agencies. Calls started flowing into the 911 Call Center. Callers reporting a multiple vehicle crash at FM 1485 near Tree Monkey. Reports stated multiple vehicles were involved and parts of vehicle were scattered. FM 1485 was reported closed and many victims injured.
DPS Trooper Purnell who was just arriving on another crash scene diverted to the crash. Another off duty Trooper who was at the office heard the call and also responded.
New Caney Fire Department and MCHD arrived on the scene and immediately called for Life Flight. Four vehicle were involved, several with heavy damage.
The East Montgomery County Concerned Citizens Group was holding a political forum at the New Caney Auditorium.
Gordy Bunch who is running for a Senate seat as set to speak to the audience when he got a message that his wife and young son were just involved in a crash on the way to the forum. He left to be with her.
According to DPS, Elica Marie Willis, of New Caney was northbound on FM 1485 with her passenger Daniel Page, 17, driving in the southbound lanes. She struck Diedre Matney of Conroe who had her 20-year-old daughter with her in their 2008 Ford pickup first. The Ford pickup ended up in the ditch and both suffered minor injuries.
She then struck a 2008 Cadillac Escalade driven by Michelle Bunch of The Woodlands. Michelle Bunch had her 9-year-old son in the vehicle. Both escaped injury but the Escalade suffered heavy left side damage.
Willis then struck Kelly Shropshire of Huffman head on in their 2013 Hyundai. She was injured.
Willis, who they believe to have been intoxicated was airlifted to Memorial Herman Hospital in Houston with a head injury. Her passenger was also injured.
One wrecker driver on the scene said he hadn’t seen a crash that bad in quite sometime. The transmission of Willis’ s Buick was almost fifty feet away, the engine one hundred feet past that.
Reports traffic was backed up past SH 242 on FM 1485 as Troopers investigated the crash.. The road was reopened just after 8 pm.
