fm2978 clear after fatal crash

A fatal crash on FM 2978 between Woodlands Parkway and Hardin Store Road has just cleared. The crash which occurred just after  9  p.m. Tuesday killed one person and sent another in critical condition to Herman Hospital in the Woodlands.

According to a witness who was driving south on FM 2978 just south of Woodlands Parkway when a Nissan Sentra attempted to pass him on the right shoulder. Unable to the witness said the Nissan came around him on the left and a white, possibly Chevrolet  extended cab pick-up with chrome wheels was right on his bumper making it almost look like one vehicle. The witness who was traveling the speed limit of 55 said they passed at almost double that.

As the witness rounded the curve just north of Hardin Store he saw a column of smoke. As he approached he viewed a Chevrolet Tahoe in the ditch with heavy front end damage and the Nissan split in two with the engine compartment totally involved in flames.

Montgomery County Hospital District was dispatched. They transported Smith  to Hermann Woodlands and the driver of the Nissan was deceased.

DPS Troopers investigating speculate the white pickup who was following the Nissan may have tapped the rear of the Nissan putting it out of control. It ran off the right side of the road, came back up and crossed into the path of the Tahoe.

That white pickup is now being sought as it fled the scene of the crash. If found the driver will be charged with Failure to stop and render aid along with a multitude of other charges.

The deceased driver was identified as Steven Fullerton, 22 , of Magnolia. The driver of the Tahoe is identified as Justin  Alan Smith, 32, who is the Dean of Students at The Woodlands Preparatory School. He was on his way home from Sam Houston State University, Tomball Campus where he is completing his Masters in Education and Principal Certification.
