Friday Afternoon Accidents Snarl I-45 in New Waverly

Firefighters free two victims trapped in their cars after a secondary accident between several cars and 18 wheeler.  EMS units from Walker and Montgomery County transport 8 to area hospitals.

Walker County– A series of accidents beginning around 5:30 pm Friday afternoon left a total of 8 people in area hospitals and brought traffic to a halt on I 45 for several hours as emergency personnel scrambled to respond to multiple emergency scenes.

The first accident occurred just north of New Waverly when a passenger car left the freeway and rolled over ejecting at least one of its occupants.  New Waverly Firefighters and Walker County EMS responded and were on scene within minutes, transporting 2 victims to Huntsville Memorial Hospital and 1 to Conroe Regional Medical Center.

As emergency crews were working that scene, traffic began to slow behind it and then an 18 wheeler approached a line of stopped cars near the Walker / Montgomery County line.   The 18 wheeler struck at least 4 other vehicles before careening off into the woods adjacent to the northbound lanes.

An off-duty Firefighter from Huntsville pulled up on the second accident scene and immediately called for additional rescue and EMS crews to respond.  The Huntsville Firefighter then took command of the second incident and began directing crews to the vehicles scattered along the roadway, where two victims were trapped in separate vehicles.   Firefighters from New Waverly responded to the second accident and began working to free the drivers, while crews from the Huntsville and North Montgomery County Fire Departments responded to assist with rescue and patient care.

Due to the severity of the damage and anticipated extended extrication time, a Lifeflight helicopter was initially dispatched to the scene, but firefighters were able to quickly free the victims, and they were transported to area hospitals by EMS units from both Walker and Montgomery County.

A total of 8 victims were transported from the two scenes, all reportedly with non-life threatening injuries.  A Heavy wrecker and a number of tow operators worked feverishly to clear the freeway and were able to get traffic flowing again by approximately 8 pm.
