HIGHWAY 105 REOPENS

Just before 10 a.m. this morning a Montgomery County Sheriffs unit requested a fire unit at 105 West at Walden road for a chemical spill. When Montgomery Fire Department arrived on the scene they ordered 105 and Walden Road both be closed. In addition they evacuated Chase Bank, Exxon, Quality Car Care. They also called for Woodlands Haz-Mat and Conroe Haz-Mat. Motorists were forced to turn around and travel FM 2854 if they were westbound. Eastbound they were run through Freeport and across the Walmart parking lot.

William Middlebrook of Caddo Springs, Texas who drives for Covenant Transport had loaded his truck with eleven 3100 pound liquid containers of Hyroflouric acid in Bryan and was enroute to Alabama. The units were strapped down in the rear but were approximately eight feet from the front wall. When Middlebrook, who was eastbound slammed on his brakes at Walden Road the load shifted. Breaking the straps the load slid forward breaking through the front wall of the trailer. Only two of the containers came through the wall but appeared to be leaking. Each container held 200-gallons.

When Haz-Mat arrived on the scene it was determined the wetness on the outside of the containers was condensation and not chemical. Milstead Environmental was notified and responded with forklifts, pallet jacks and a heavy duty wrecker. Once there the load was removed to Walden Road. Another Covenant truck was dispatched to the scene.

At 1pm 105 was reopened to traffic. Walden Road remained closed as crews loaded the replacement truck with the containers.

At 2pm traffic was back to normal.

Hydrofluoric acid is quite toxic. In a dry state it is called hydrogen fluoride. Hydrogen fluoride is used to make refrigerants, herbicides, pharmaceuticals, high-octane gasoline, aluminum, plastics, electrical components, and fluorescent light bulbs. Sixty percent of the hydrogen fluoride used in manufacturing is for processes to make refrigerants. Hydrogen fluoride goes easily and quickly through the skin and into the tissues in the body. There it damages the cells and causes them to not work properly. This product is used for etching metal and glass.

MCSO was assisted by Conroe Police and Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constables Office.
