Just after 6 pm Friday 911 dispatchers started receiving calls for a hole in the middle of heavily traveled FM 1097 on the short bridge over Lake Conroe. They reported rock, water ad slippery mud coming out of it. Montgomery County Sheriff’s units responded and closed the bridge. TXDOT arrived on the scene and determined the hole was caused by a boring machine being used to run a fiber optic line under Lake Conroe. Somehow it shifted direction and came through the road surface. Water and drilling mud was coming out of the hole. Overnight TXDOT has closed the main lanes of the short bridge between Lake Conroe Village and Longstreet Road. They have however opened the eastbound and westbound shoulders to keep traffic flowing. Repairs are expected to begin in the morning. The boring machine sits idle alongside the bridge, however, crews dug a hole of approximately 12-feet deep in the high weeds next to the roadway and did not mark it with barricades or tape. A young child who was fishing at the piers at the bridge tonight almost walked right into it.
