HORSES AWARDED TO THE SPCA

After almost an 8 hour hearing Thursday Judge Seiler awarded over 200 horses to the Houston SPCA. During the hearing the judge heard from an SPCA veterinarian, the VP of accounting with the SPCA, Hermann Hoffman, who owned the horses and a Montgomery County Precinct 5 Deputy Constable who has been dealing with the situation for several years. Deputy Welch told the court how many trips had been made out to the Calico Dairy on League Line Road and the suggestions he gave Hoffman to bring the horses back to good health.

Pat Mahoney with the Houston SPCA said the costs to this point to keep the horses is $480,000. Herman’s attorney questioned the expenses as the SPCA was charging $40 a day for board. She said that was inline with Katy Veterinary Clinic and Waller Equine Hospital. However, he questioned if all the horses were actually seeing a vet daily and in individual stalls as at a veterinary clinic. She was unable to give a firm answer. Other costs included vet supplies, vet bills, feed at $40 a day and micro-chipping at $10 each.

Seiler also awarded the SPCA the sum of $480,000 which Herman will be responsible for.

County Attorney J.D. Lambright was pleased with the ruling. He said charges are still pending against Hoffman and his wife. They include 20 cases each of cruelty to livestock animals and a felony charge of tampering with evidence. This was when Hoffman tried to relocate 5 horses just before the June 24, raid.
