NORTH MONTGOMERY COUNTY – Two days after awarded a pair of severely neglected horses to the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Lanny Moriarty signed a warrant to remove five animals from another location.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office contacted Pct. 5 livestock officer Gordon Welch regarding reports of horses in poor condition at a residence on FM 149 north of Montgomery.
Welch went to the location and determined the reportees’ concerns were valid. He described their situation as “dire.” Welch contacted Judge Moriarty who personally went to the residence and after seeing the animals, signed a warrant for their removal.
The Houston SPCA responded and removed the horses and dog. Next week Moriarty is expected to decide whether the animals will be awarded to the SPCA or returned to their owners.
Welch said his preliminary investigation indicated the animals’ owners had to go out of town for an extended period and had arranged from someone to care for the animals, but that person failed to do so.
