HOUSTON VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT ASSISTANT CHIEF PASSES

Jerald Duane RicksIt is a sad day today. Assistant Chief Jerald Duane Ricks of the Houston Volunteer Fire Department and retired Houston Firefighter passed away today. Over the past few days he suffered some medical issues. He was 59-years-old.

. Jerald was one of those rare people who was born and raised in Houston, Texas. He had several jobs during his too short life, and the jobs he enjoyed the most allowed him to indulge his love for the fire service. That was his main passion since his teens. He hated it when his deteriorating health meant he couldn’t be involved in it anymore.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ricks; sister, Glenda Ricks; stepmother, Kathy Ricks; half-brother, Kelley Ricks; stepbrother James Watson and his family, and stepsister Charleen Watson and her family, and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Ricks; and his father, Duane Ricks.

At Jerald’s request, there will be no funeral or burial service. A visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 21, 2013, at the Schmidt Funeral Home Chapel, 1508 East Avenue, Katy, Texas, 77493.

In lieu of flowers, if you want to provide a donation to a charity in Jerald’s name, you might consider The 100 Club Houston, 5555 San Felipe Street, Suite #1750, Houston, Texas 77056-2733, or the Houston Fire Museum, 2403 Milam Street, Houston, Texas 77006.
