Two Houston police officers have been hospitalized following a crash with a suspected drunk driver in southeast Houston, police say.
According to Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo, the crash happened just before midnight in the 10100 block of Telephone Road when the officers were responding to a call of an officer in need of assistance. While en route, a vehicle turned in front of the officers nearly causing a head-on collision. The Tahoe in which the officers were in, flipped multiple times and burst into flames. The officer driving identified as John Daily, 25, was trapped in the vehicle. The passenger officer Olanzio Reiz was able to get out. He and a citizen worked to get the driver officer out of the burning vehicle. The driver officer was transported to Memorial Southeast with burns over 50% of his body. He was then Life Flighted to Hermann in the Medical Center. Officer Reiz along with the citizen both also sustained some burns as they rescued Daily from the burning vehicle. The 24-year-old Hispanic intoxicated driver who turned in front of the patrol car was taken into custody and not injured.
Then just before 2am another drunk driver hit a patrol car in the 200 block of West Little York. Those officers were not injured but other officers were able to pursue the intoxicated driver and take him into custody.
Also, last night just before 10 pm officers at the Walmart in the 100 block of Yale were attempting to stop an intoxicated driver. The female driver stopped and then backed into the officers, they were not injured.
