On January 28, 2017, Gary Johnson was driving Northbound in the 11000 block of East Sam Houston Parkway North, Northbound service road near Little York. He was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu. Johnson failed to drive in a single lane of traffic and left the roadway on the inside. The vehicle continued through the grass for some distance before striking the concrete base for one of the steel Harris County Toll Road camera poles. The front of the vehicle struck the pole and the vehicle came to rest just West of the pole. The vehicle caught fire. Several passing witnesses stopped and were able to break the glass to the windows and enter the vehicle. The witnesses were able to extract a non-responsive Johnson from the vehicle before the fire reached him. The car burned nearly completely. The witnesses performed CPR on Johnson. CPR was continued by EMS when they arrived. EMS transported Johnson to East Houston Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased at approximately 11:01PM. Johnson died 59 minutes before his 46th birthday. Passerbys who assisted in the rescue said they did smell alcohol. That will be determined in autopsy.This crash is being investigated by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Section.
