Wednesday evening just before 6 p.m. two calls came into the 911 call center for a boater in trouble on Lake Conroe. The location given was near Lake Conroe Drive and Longmire, just across the cove from Piney Shores Marina. One caller stated the boat was going in circles and the victim was hanging to the side.
MCHD was dispatched as was a fireboat from North Montgomery County Fire Department and Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constables Lake Patrol.
While they were enroute an Emergency Room Physician visiting from Dallas saw the commotion and went to offer his help. When he saw the victim in the water he went to him with his jet ski and attempted to pull him approximately one-hundred feet to the shore. Finding that difficult to do he jumped into the water and started to swim to shore with the victim. Another boater in a John boat saw what was happening and pulled up allowing the doctor to grab the boat and be towed to shore.
CPR was immediately started but the doctor was unsuccessful.
The victim, identified as 59-year-old George Allen Blackwell Jr., of Tomball was pronounced dead on the scene and transported to the Montgomery County Forensic Center by Eickenhorst Funeral Directors.
According to Lt. Dan Cain of the Montgomery County Precinct One Lake Patrol it isn’t known exactly what transpired. Blackwell who was also on a John boat with a rear tiller apparently either had a medical condition and fell over board, or just fell. Part of his clothing was found hung on a tie down hook in the boat indicating he may have caught it. Blackwell who had been fishing in the area almost an hour had all the safety equipment on board including a life vest. The issue with the life vest, according to Cain was that Blackwell wasn’t wearing it.
