LAKE HOUSTON WATER RESCUE

Two teens came close to spending Friday night on Lake Houston.. The pair started fishing in the boat near shore where family members were fishing from shore. After a time the engine would not start and the winds started moving it across the lake. Family members didn’t know who to call. They checked the internet and tried several numbers. Lake Patrol and no luck, they tried HPD non-emergency number but told them it wasn’t an emergency as they were safe on the boat, just the boat wouldn’t start. They finally called back to Houston Police non emergency and an officer on the line helped them. He told them that they don’t deal with it daily so he was going to transfer them to 911 and get them help. The call was transferred and the information given to 911 operator after the usual, “What is your emergency?” A short time later Houston Fire Department appeared on the east shore of Lake Houston with a fireboat and engine. HPD posted on the McKay Bridge looking for the boat. HPD dispatched a helicopter to begin a search. They were finally located and towed to shore. They thanked the rescuers but still had concerns as it was not a true emergency and who to call. Houston Police told them in a situation again call Houston Police and tell them that Houston Police Lake Patrol is needed,.?The office is manned during the day and at night the officers who work Lake Patrol and minutes away and respond from their homes.
