Many people in Montgomery County are seeing a large column of smoke for the last several hours. This fire is actually well into Harris County. Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Texas Forest Service are burning off an area for the new Sheldon Lake Park which is east of Beltway 8 off Garrett Road. Most of the under brush had been cut but the area close to the lake was extremely wet and unable to get equipment in.It consists of extremely heavy underbrush. They plan to finish the burn by 5 p.m..
This burn takes place once every 20-years but this time it will be put to good use. The new director of the park has started making major improvements such as closing the road off Highway 90 which crossed the very busy railroad tracks and building a brand new road off Garrett Road.
They place fishing, camping and installing observation decks.
