Saturday night Dayton Fire Department was dispatched to a reported large fire on County Road 624 near Wolf Road, just inside the Liberty County/Harris County Line. Units arrived to find a massive pile of what at first appeared to be construction debris burning. Additional help from Huffman, 321 Fire and Hardin Fire were requested. According to Liberty County Fire Marshal Bill Hergemueller, the debris is from a company using the site to recycle FEMA trailers. They bring them in, get the metal and usable components a then stack the remaining wood and waste. The large pile had been cleared all the way around it as if it was cleared for a burn. However, Hergemueller said it was an illegal burn. TCEQ was alerted and will also be responding to the scene. Firefighters lined tankers up and pumped over 500 gallons of foam in an effort to smother the blaze, He estimated well over 100 trailers had been on the site and destroyed for scrap before setting the blaze.
