LIBERTY COUNTY JUDGE AND WIFE LIFE FLIGHTED

A head on two vehicle crash at 12:15 am this morning sent Liberty County Judge Craig McNair and his wife, Lisa to Herman Hospital, in Houston, via Life Flight with undetermined injuries. Sgt. Joel Davila, LCSO, reported that both the Judge and his wife appeared to be in “stable” condition when Life Flight picked them up after landing just north of the wreck scene.

According to Sgt. Davila, the wreck occurred in the 800 block of CR 603 in South Liberty County just north of Hwy. 90. Sgt. Davila stated that initial investigation indicates that Judge McNair was north bound on CR 603 driving his 2012 GMC vehicle when a south bound 2007 Ford Expedition driven by German Mata, Hispanic male 17 years of age and driving with flashing “red and blue” lights, crossed over into Judge McNair’s lane and struck his vehicle head on.

When the responding agencies arrived on the scene, Edgar Mata, Hispanic male, 21 years of age and brother to German Mata was on the scene and claimed to be the driver of his brother’s vehicle. German Mata had fled the scene after the crash and went to his home approximately a mile away where a family member drove Edgar Mata to the scene to take responsibility for the wreck. When these facts were discovered during the on scene investigation, Sgt. Davila, Deputy John Bennett of the LCSO and Dayton Police Officer Siebeurt and Officer Hart went to the home of Mata located at #2313 CR 603 and detained German Mata who was found asleep in his bed. German Mata was later turned over to Trooper Godfrey who filed charges on both of the Mata brothers. At this time there is no known reason as to why German Mata was running his vehicle with “red and blue” lights on his vehicle. Apparently he had just bought them and installed them a few days ago. Mata was found to have only minor injuries that did not require any treatment.

According to Sgt. Davila, Edgar Mata, DOB 2-27-93 was charged with Making a False Report to a Peace Officer and with Public Intoxication. His brother and actual driver of the striking vehicle, German Mata, DOB 3-6-97 was charged with Failure to Stop and Render Aid, Improper use of Red and Blue Lights and No Texas Driver’s License. Both brothers were placed in the Liberty County jail and will go before the Judge later.

The investigation will be conducted by the Department of Public Service and as of this time, there is no update on the condition of Judge McNair and his wife, Lisa.
