LIBERTY COUNTY SAFETY ADVISORY

In response to several calls of concern and complaint from citizens to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Department regarding loud explosions in the Kenefick area that are rattling windows of homes, Sheriff Bobby Rader directed an investigation into the source of these explosions. It was very quickly determined that from information received and a search of the Academy store website, that explosive devices are being sold by several “out door stores” that are called “exploding targets”.

As an example, the Academy stores website advertise these “Red Jacket Firearms exploding targets” in one pound containers of mixed chemicals. They are detonated when a rifle shot is fired into them. There are unconfirmed reports that some people are using the exploding devises to blast beaver dams from creeks and also unconfirmed reports that some are placing gasoline containers next to the exploding target so a large exploding fire will result when the target is hit.

Needless to say, it would appear that any misuse or abuse of the intended purpose of this devise could very well result in injury or worse for anyone in the nearby area. There are no laws that prevents the use of these devices but Sheriff Rader is advising extreme caution be exercised by anyone using these “exploding targets” or anyone that is near to the gunshot(s) or target area.
