Local Firefighters Called Away

Some Montgomery County firefighters are a long way from home, helping agencies exhausted by unending wildfires. North Montgomery County Fire Chief Jason Oliphant said his agency, as well as Porter Fire Department and Caney Creek Fire Department answered the call for assistance near Ozona, in Crockett County.  Seven firefighters and three apparatus left at 5 a.m. Saturday morning, prepared for a 10-14 day deployment, Chief Oliphant said. The long distance mutual aid marks the first time since 2011 NMCFD has deployed firefighters to assist with wildfires elsewhere in the state.

As of Sunday night, there were no reported injuries or cases of heat exhaustion among firefighters battling the fires.
