For a Willis couple and their friend a trip to watch the Houston Texans turned out in disaster. Just before 7:30 pm Monday night the three were driving south on I-45 just north of Research in Shenandoah when they came up on a mattress in the middle of the freeway. The female driver tried to swerve to miss it but struck the mattress with her Mitsubishi Montero SUV. The vehicle flipped onto it’s roof sliding down the freeway on it’s roof in heavy traffic. The female driver said the only thing she remembers seeing as they were seat belted upside down was an 18-wheeler headed directly for them. The were not struck by any other vehicles.
Woodlands Fire Department and Shenandoah Police closed all but the left shoulder of the southbound lanes as they cleared the bed frame pieces, box spring and mattress from the freeway.
All three received minor cuts and scratches.
When crews first arrived they found a child safety seat sitting in the moving lanes of traffic along with children’s story books and toys. Luckily the drivers children had been left with family members.
Shenandoah Police are requesting anyone who witnessed the bed come out of a vehicle and can identify the vehicle to please call Shenandoah Police.
