“I LOVE YOU THE BOAT IS SINKING” WORDS OF HUSBAND WHO WAS RESCUED OFFSHORE SUNDAY MORNING

Early Sunday morning Christi with Galveston 911 received an urgent call for help. A man and his three sons were about 10 miles off shore near a rig, when the lower unit of the motor went out and it started taking on water. Bruce Hecker took his sons out fishing. He fishes for a living, supplying local bait stores with their bait. He checked weather and was told seas were two feet with light winds. That wasn’t the fact when he got out there. When the unit went out Hecker called his wife who started calling everyone, she was able to reach Galveston 911 who then contacted her husband several times as calls dropped. Hecker praised Christi. At first it was thought they were just off East Beach. Galveston Police along with Galveston Fire Department Responded. DPS was contacted for a helicopter. They were going to be able to fly to locate them but the helicopter was not set up for water rescue offshore. The Coast Guard responded and were able to locate then near a rig. Bruce had thrown almost anything that had weight overboard to help keep the boat from sinking.
The Coast Guard rescued the men and towed their boat back to the Galveston Yacht Club. There the family was reunited. Heckler’s daughter received a message from her husband 22-year-old Brian Durham on her phone, “I LOVE YOU THE BOAT IS SINKING”. That was at 1:53 AM, Victoria Durham did not see it until after 4 am. By that time the Coast Guard had already rescued them and was returning with her father Bruce Heckler, her husband and two other brothers 15-year-old Bruce and 14-year-old Dakota.
Just after 6am they arrived at the Marina.
