MAJOR ACCIDENT SNARLS CONROE TRAFFIC

Just after 9:00 this morning an a one ton work truck was westbound on South Loop 336. The driver went through the light at Frazier but the light at the freeway hadn’t changed yet. Attempting to take evasive action the driver swerved to the right to miss two vehicles in front of him that were stopped for the light. He then lost control ran through the red light and slammed into a vehicle that was in the u-turn lane under the freeway waiting for traffic to clear so the driver could go north.

The driver of the truck immediately jumped out to assist the other driver. When he did he left his truck with standard transmission in neutral. The work truck then rolled backwards through the intersection and back down the loop to Frazier. At the intersection of Frazier and the loop it slammed into the traffic light control box, ripping it out of the ground and coming to rest against the pole supporting the signals. The impact of that broke the signals from their mounts dropping them to the ground.

Conroe Fire Department responded to the scene and had to cut the roof off the vehicle in the u-turn lane to free the driver. That driver was transported by MCHD in stable condition.

While this was happening another driver on the northbound lane of Frazier and the eastbound lane of the loop ran into the rear of another vehicle with no injuries.

Conroe Police Department requested Conroe Public Works to place stop signs in the intersection.

TXDOT responded to the scene and are awaiting crews from Houston to start the over $200,000 job of replacing the signals, control box and damaged wires. Depending on the extent of the damage it could take up to two days.

Names were not immediately available.

ALL LANES ON THE LOOP AT 45, THE LOOP AT FRAZIER AND THE FREEWAY FEEDER AT BOTH EAST AND WESTBOUND LOOP INTERSECTIONS ARE NOW BEING CONTROLLED BY STOP SIGNS. TRAFFIC IN THE AREA IS VERY HEAVY AND WILL BE UNTIL REPAIRS ARE COMPLETE.
