Just after 1 p.m. today Plum Grove Fire Department was dispatched to a grass and woods fire on FM 1010 on the Harris County/ Liberty County line. When they arrived additional help was immediately requested. The fire along a pipeline quickly got out of control with the high winds. In the beginning the winds were pushing north. Firefighters from Splendora, Plum Grove and New Caney quickly evacuated several homes and started applying foam to the roof of one home. Just as the fire which was crowning in the trees approached the home the wind shifted pushing it west away from the house.
As not just forest land but land burned two years ago in a fire and pasture land fed the fast moving fire. The Texas Forest Service responded with aircraft, a helicopter and several dozers. A fire line was cut just as the fire reached the San Jacinto River. With the heavy wooded area along the river it was feared the fire could have crossed the river and threatened Roman Forest. At this point the fire is almost contained. Contained means it is within a perimeter but not close to being out. That job could take several days.
Updates as available.
FM1010 is closed completely due to fire equipment and hoses on the road.
