Just before 6 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2012 a Dodge Dakota was southbound on I-45 between Wilson Road and SH 105. The driver, Melton Brown, 64, of Spring, lost control of the vehicle when the trailer with the bass boat he was pulling started jumping possibly due to a tire issue. A Ford Explorer was traveling next to Browns vehicle driven by Charles Hughes, 60 of Houston, his wife, and their 7-year-old grandson. The pickup clipped the SUV hitting and slicing it’s tire. As the truck spun with the trailer the SUV started flipping.
The truck came to rest facing traffic in the south bound lane. The child which was sleeping on the back seat and not in any type of a safety restraint was ejected as the SUV came to rest upside down against the right shoulder barrier. The child landed eighty-seven feet away on the exit ramp to SH 105.
PHI Air Medical was dispatched to the scene but due to the injuries the child was transported to Conroe Regional Hospital in critical condition with a head injury ,broken ribs. a broken elbow and hip. Some feel the blankets the child was wrapped in actually padded her.
Last Thursday Brown was indicted by the Montgomery County Grand Jury on the charges of intoxicated assault and driving while intoxicated, third or more.
