A memorial was held Saturday afternoon marking the one-year anniversary of the deadliest fire in Bryan Fire Departments history.
Over 200 people attended the service held at the Firefighter Memorial which is located in front of the Bryan Library. The event honored not just firefighters lost over the years but Lieutenants Eric Wallace and Greg Pickard who died in the inferno when the Knights of Columbus Hall burned last year. It also honored two firefighters that tried to save them Rick Martley and Mitch Moran both of which were badly injured. Lieutenants Pickard and Wallace will have their names added to a new memorial that will be erected at the site of the current one. The new memorial wall will list not just the fallen but also the retired firefighters of the Bryan Fire Department.
During the ceremony Ricky Mantley, who continues to go through reconstructive surgery placed a red wreath on the site.
Firefighter Moran, who has also gone through many surgeries was called forward to the podium by the Bryan Fire Chief Randy McGregor. At the same moment Ladder 1 pulled forward. AS Moran approached, Chief Randy McGregor announced, “Firefighter Moran, you have been cleared for duty, report for duty”. With that Moran slipped out of his dress blue coat and hat, handing them to the chief. He then walked to Ladder 1, opened the rear door and retrieved his firefighter bunker gear. After a few moments of suiting up, he climbed aboard Engine 1 which then pulled away.
