Monday Apartment Fire Victim Identified

Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office identifies victim as 78 year old Gladys Sims, preliminary autopsy results indicate that victim died prior to the fire from a medical emergency.

Early Monday morning, around 2:20am, residents at the Providence Place Senior Apartments on Kuykendahl Rd. off FM 1488 began calling 911 reporting that they smelled smoke and could hear a fire alarm sounding in one of the first floor apartments.  Within minutes crews from the Magnolia and Needham Fire Departments were on scene.  Firefighters entered the apartment where the alarm was sounding, and in spite of the smoke that had filled the apartment, they were able to locate the lone occupant of the apartment deceased on a couch in the living room.  Firefighters also determined that the source of the smoke was a fire on the stove in the kitchen which had self-extinguished prior to their arrival.

A Deputy Fire Marshal responded to the scene and began an investigation into both the cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the death.  The victim was identified as the apartment resident, 78 year old Gladys Sims.  Ms. Sims body was transported to the Montgomery County Forensic Center while the investigation into the fire continued.

During the investigation and subsequent autopsy, it was determined that Ms. Sims had suffered a medical emergency while preparing to cook a meal and had succumbed to that medical emergency, leaving her cooking unattended.  A fire eventually ignited on the stove, but did not have sufficient fuel to spread to the kitchen cabinets or anything else that would burn and the fire ran out of fuel and self-extinguished.
