Wednesday afternoon Montgomery County District Attorney awarded several agencies and officers for their commitment in making the roads of Montgomery County safer by cutting down on impaired drivers. The awards were started when Ligon took office. At that time there was no concerted effort to go after impaired drivers. Within a very short time that changed. With an average of 25 murders a year In the county, where the majority are related to family violence, but what is the one crime in this community that we are all at the same risk of facing horrible and catastrophic death? It’s DWI.
The first 2017 award was given to Trooper Bruno Miauro who requested to be on night shift in an effort to stop DWI drivers. He finished his training as a Trooper on December 31, 2016 and in one year was in the top three for total DWI arrests. In his first year he was known for well documenting the cases making them strong cases to go to court with. He finished 2017 out by testifying in two back to back DWI cases against experienced attorney’s. Trooper Miauro also spends his weekends with the Air National Guard.
The agency of the year for 2017 was Montgomery County Precinct 3 Constable Ryan Gable and his efforts to curb the DWI drivers. With many restaurants and establishments serving alcohol in the Precinct 3 area it Is known there will be more intoxicated drivers who take that chance driving after consuming alcohol. Precinct 3 Constable Ryan approached Commissioners Court and asked for deputies to be assigned to a DWI type task force. Deputy Patterson and Corporal Terrell together made more DWI arrests in 2017 than the entire department did in 2016.
The investigator of the year went to the DPS Crash Team. Made up of Sgt. Barnhill, Sgt. Schneider, Trooper Taska and Trooper Williams. They are responsible for reviewing all the fatal crashes in Montgomery, Liberty and Walker Counties. With the 43 fatal crashes in 2017 they were called upon to scale, photograph and investigate the crash. Many of these investigations can take up to 6 hours just on the scene. They then go back with all the data collected and plot the crash scene. In addition they talk to others, and attempt to collect any other evidence. They were also called upon for a Jack in the Box shooting on FM 1960, the Trooper shooting in Waller County and several other scenes that required precise documentation.
In the near future impaired drivers will be faced with No Refusal during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and Spring Break.
